Can you use plain water, "holy" water from religious leaders, or boiled water to clean the eye?
No. FDA requires products designed to go into the eye be sterile. That means free of all infectious organisms like viruses, bacteria, protozoa, and fungi. This also means free from airborne contamination. Even if you boil water the water is not sterile because the air around the water has not been filtered of microscopic contaminates. Contaminated products put in the eye, especially water deemed to be 'holy', could lead to serious eye infection and blindness.
